President declares Poland needs strong, well-trained army

Poland needs a strong, well-trained and well-equipped army with a high morale, President Andrzej Duda said on Thursday in Warsaw at the promotion of high military officers to general's rank.

The promotions were part of Thursday's observances of Cursed Soldiers Day honouring Poland's anti-communist underground in the early post-war years.

In his ceremonial address, Andrzej Duda stressed that Poland needed a strong and well-trained military force.

"We need a disciplined, motivated army with a high morale, a patriotic attitude and a strong sense of responsibility towards their country and compatriots. But we also need a well-equipped force, whose soldiers are as safeguarded as possible, because the lives and health of soldiers are the top priority, but are also able to carry out their tasks in service to and in defence of the Motherland efficiently" the president said.

President Duda said that the reasons why Poland needed such an army were evident in view of the changing security situation in Europe and the world.

Among the newly-promoted generals are the Polish army's General Staff head Leszek Surawski, General Commander Jaroslaw Mika and Operational Commander Slawomir Wojciechowski.
