President appoints new major-general, brigadier general

President Andrzej Duda advanced Piotr Blazeusz to the rank of major-general during a ceremony held at the Orzysz training ground on Tuesday.

Major-General Blazeusz, the Chief of the Staff of the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, received the nomination in connection with his planned appointment to the position of Deputy Chief of Staff for Planning in the Supreme Headquarters of Allied Powers in Europe (SHAPE).

The president also advanced Colonel Dariusz Lewandowski, the commander of the 21st Highland Rifle Brigade, to the rank of brigadier general.

President Duda's visit to the Land Forces Training Centre in Orzysz was tied to the ending of the Dragon-19 exercise, the largest military exercise to take place in Poland this year, and celebrated Poland's taking command of the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) in 2020.

The president stressed the importance of tasks facing both generals. Duda noted that posts that they will take over are directly tied to NATO's security, its eastern flank and thus also with Poland's security. He added that ahead are numerous and various field and planning tasks which have to be implemented, as well as numerous tasks linked with the modernisation of the Polish Armed Forces which also have to be executed.

Next year, Poland will lead NATO's high-readiness Spearhead Force which is comprised of land, air, sea and special forces units capable of being deployed at short notice to threats against NATO sovereignty.
