President: Poles grateful to veterans for their heroism

Poles are very grateful for your heroism, for your great courage, for your perseverance, President Andrzej Duda told veterans at a Saturday ceremony marking the Polish Independence Struggle Veterans' Day in Warsaw's Piłsudski Square.

"I'm extremely glad that we can welcome our great veterans from around the world in Warsaw on the 100th anniversary of regaining independence by Poland. I would like to thank you that you decided to come to meet with us," the president said.

"You fought for a free Poland on all fronts of the Second World War; with Poles everywhere, with the Polish eagle everywhere, with the white and red flag everywhere, and in so many places in the world people saw this badge with 'Poland' written on a soldier's uniform sleeve," President Duda said.

The ceremonies, also attended by the head of the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression Jan Kasprzyk, are part of the World Congress of Polish Independence Struggle Veterans that started on Saturday. It features almost 300 veterans from Poland and 14 other countries.
