Polish president, Ukrainian security council head hold talks

Head of the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov began a two-day visit to Warsaw on Thursday at the invitation of Polish National Security Bureau (BBN) head Pawel Soloch.

During talks with President Andrzej Duda, Turchynov declared that the change of government in his country would not affect Ukraine's foreign and defence policies, according to presidential minister Krzysztof Szczerski.

Turchynov also informed Duda about the deteriorating security situation in eastern Ukraine and voiced fears that in spring the conflict would be rekindled, as the amount of weaponry in eastern Ukraine was not decreasing, Szczerski said.

The talks also concerned a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission at the state leaders' level, which is planned during the NATO summit in Warsaw in July.

President Duda assured Turchynov that Poland would try to make sure that the commission sent a clear signal that security cooperation between NATO and Ukraine should be expanded, continued, and have a practical dimension of technical and military cooperation, according to Szczerski.

The two politicians discussed security and technical military cooperation between their countries, including joint NATO military exercises, and emphasised the importance of the joint Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian brigade.

"The two officials presented a joint stand on the necessity for (Ukrainian military pilot - PAP) Nadia Savchenko's release from a Russian prison. The international community should put pressure on Russia to secure her release", Szczerski also said.
