Head of BBN: NATO summit guidelines after defence ministers' talks

Guidelines for the July NATO summit in Warsaw will fall after a February 10-11 meeting of NATO defence ministers, National Security Bureau (BBN) head Pawel Soloch said Friday in Warsaw.

On Friday Soloch attended a panel debate devoted to the Warsaw summit hosted by the Euro-Atlantic Association.

Soloch said the NATO defence ministers' meeting would probably set the guidelines for the Warsaw summit, which was expected to map out NATO's responses to the changed security situation. In this context he especially mentioned progress in implementing the decisions of the previous Newport summit and raised NATO presence in the east.

"We expect the NATO summit to mark out directions for the Alliance's military, political and institutional adjustment in view of the new elements in international security", Soloch said.

Soloch stressed that the Warsaw summit's main aim will be preserving NATO's unity, especially in light of "forces and countries" interested in fomenting divisions in the Alliance. He added that NATO unity was also of key importance for military reinforcement plans in the east.

The Warsaw NATO summit is scheduled for July 8-9 at Warsaw's National Stadium. Expected are about 2.5 thousand delegates, including state and government leaders and the heads of the UN, EU and the World Bank.
