President extends Afghan mission

President Bronislaw Komorowski has extended the mission of the Polish military contingent in Afghanistan as part of NATO's Resolute Support mission in that country, the National Security Bureau (BBN) announced on Wednesday.

NATO's Resolute Support mission in Afghanistan, which replaced ISAF at the beginning of 2015, is advisory. Polish troops do not take part in combat operations.

The second shift of the Polish Resolute Support force will number a maximum 200 troops and civilian staff. Their current tour of duty in Afghanistan ends on December 31, 2015. The first shift which ended on June 30 numbered 150 troops.

On the force are mainly higher officers from the Defence Ministry, the Polish Army's General Staff and the military General and Operational Command.

The Defence Ministry has earmarked PLN 35.56 million for the Polish contingent's participation in the Resolute Support mission.
