President, Japanese PM discuss security, economy
Cooperation in security and economy dominated Friday talks between Japan-visiting Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe. Both politicians agreed that Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula was a serious threat to peace.
The talks with Abe were the last point of Komorowski's two-day Japan visit.
At a joint press briefing with Prime Minister Abe after the talks, President Komorowski said both he and the Japanese PM lay weight on Polish-Japanese political cooperation, especially in security and defence, "in face of the global threat of terrorism and moves which ignore the sovereignty and independence of neighbours".
In this context President Komorowski said both countries saw the need to reform the UN, especially its Security Council.
In a joint statement both politicians agreed that developments in east Ukraine and Russia's illegal annexation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula constituted a serious threat to world peace. They also appealed for the conflict's resolution by peaceful and diplomatic means and in full respect of Ukraine's independence.
In their statement PM Abe and President Komorowski also announced their intention to seek cooperation with the Eastern Partnership countries, especially Ukraine.
At the briefing President Komorowski reminded that Japan was the biggest Asian investor in Poland, he also mentioned the Polish-Japanese Sierra Gorda copper mine in Chile, which is among others to supply copper to Japan.
PM Abe assured that there would be "no acceptance for rising armed fundamentalisms or attempts to force status quo changes"
"We will be actively involved for peace and stability, both on the local and global scale", the Japanese PM said. He also stressed the important role of economic ties in Polish-Japanese relations and Japan's ties with the EU.
President Komorowski and PM Abe also discussed the establishment of a strategic partnership between their countries.
