President visits Japan

The securement of a Polish-Japanese strategic partnership is the main aim of a 2-day visit in Japan by President Bronislaw Komorowski and his wife. On Thursday, the first day of the visit, the presidential pair will meet the Japanese emperor and empress. Komorowski's talks with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will focus on terrorism and security, including cooperation between Poland's National Security Bureau (BBN) and Japan's National Security Council.

On Wednesday shortly before his departure to Tokyo Komorowski said the main aim of the visit was to secure a strategic partnership between Japan and Poland. He added that he managed to establish such ties with China and South Korea during visits to these countries in 2011 and 2013.

Komorowski said the partnership project aimed to strengthen Poland's economic position in Asia. He added that his talks in Japan will cover Japan's ties with NATO, especially current joint undertakings in Afghanistan, the Ukraine crisis and policies aimed at halting Russia's aggressive policy towards that country, and the promotion of Polish enterprise.

In this context Komorowski reminded that Japan was the biggest Asian investor in Poland. Accompanying the president to Japan will be 50 enterprisers seeking business ties in Japan.

Komorowski's aide Jaromir Sokolowski told PAP that the president will also encourage Japan to lift its export barriers for Polish pork and open its market to Polish fruit and vegetables.

On Friday Komorowski will hold talks with Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and attend the opening of a Polish-Japanese Economic forum. Later in the day the presidential pair will meet students and staff of the Polish studies department of the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.

Komorowski's Japan visit was originally planned in November but was cancelled owing to his involvement in resolving problems caused by IT failures during that month's local elections in Poland.
