President Komorowski after National Security Council meeting: Minsk agreement endangered

The Minsk agreement on a ceasefire in the Ukrainian-Russian conflict is endangered, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski opined following a Wednesday meeting of the National Security Council (RBN). The situation in Ukraine and the 2016 NATO summit in Warsaw were the main topics of the the RBN meeting in Warsaw.

Referring to latest reports from eastern Ukraine, President Komorowski said that "most important will be how the countries who signed the Minsk agreement assess the situation, especially Ukraine."

"It seems obvious that this agreement is threatened by the continuation of fighting in Debaltseve, which may endanger the (peace - PAP) process, a situation which we would not wish," said the president expressing hope that the peace process will be continued.

President Komorowski said he was going to Kiev on Sunday where he will ask Ukrainian President Petr Poroshenko for an assessment of the military crisis in the region and "prospects for the implementation of the entire accord reached in Minsk."

Bronislaw Komorowski stressed that during the meeting he asked for "restraint in questioning Poland's policy in matters on which political consensus has apparently been reached for ad-hoc political ends."

The president also voiced concern about election campaign suggestions to send Polish troops to Donbas, which he called "inconsistent with Poland's accepted policy."

He added that he was also worried about "attempts to pressure the Polish state into correcting its clear statements on issues as sensitive as weaponry." Komorowski noted that Poland had not announced its will to supply weapons, nor were there any preparations for a decision to sell arms.

"Somewhere amidst the temptations arising in connection with the election campaign is the official line of the Polish state, which means that we support Ukraine and seek a peaceful solution to the conflict, we encourage Ukraine to reform, we support it on the international arena and strive to uphold that what Ukraine needs most - NATO and EU unity regarding the Ukrainian-Russian conflict," said the president.

The RBN meeting was also devoted to preparations for a planned NATO summit in Warsaw in 2016.

The Warsaw NATO summit will confirm Poland's role as a reliable ally and partner, President Bronislaw Komorowski said. "It will be a very important summit for us because it will also enable us to confirm Poland's role as a reliable ally and partner within NATO.

Komorowski reminded that he invited the leaders of NATO countries to participate in the Warsaw meeting at last year's summit in Newport.

"These summits will be very important because the one in Newport has made important decisions about strengthening the eastern flank, and thus also our country's security. The Warsaw summit will provide an opportunity to evaluate the introduction of the NATO defence system," said Komorowski.
