Speaking about his meeting with President Yanukovych, Komorowski said they had "exchanged opinions about threats to Ukraine, which might mean "regression of democracy", including freedom of speech.

President Komorowski said he was speaking about a draft which in the opinion of Ukrainian journalists and opposition could limit freedom of speech in Ukraine. Recently the draft was withdrawn from the Ukrainian parliament.

President Yanukovych told the Polish head of state that the bill would not be debated and the current law would not be significantly changed.

President Komorowski stressed "that it was always easier to support Ukraine's EU bid if it met democratic standards".

Also on Wednesday the Polish president met with Afghan head of state Hamid Karzai.

According to presidential minister Jaromir Sokolowski, President Karzai thanked President Komorowski "for Poland's engagement in Afghanistan".

"And President Komorowski asked President Karzai for an assessment of the current situation in Afghanistan," minister Sokolowski added.
