Secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia visits Poland

19-21 June 2011. Invited by the Head of the NSB, the Secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia, Mr. Giorgi Bokeria visited Poland.

On Monday morning (20 June 2011) the NSB hosted plenary talks. However, before the talks started, Georgian delegation saw the exhibition “Poles in Georgia” prepared by the State Archive of the Capital City of Warsaw and National Archive of Georgia, which was borrowed by the NSB in order to honor the Mr. Bokeria’s visit to Poland. The exhibition was prepared in 2010 to celebrate 90th anniversary of Polish and Georgian diplomatic relations and in September it will be moved to Tbilisi.

The talks covered, among others, regional security including „frozen conflicts” in the countries belonging to the Eastern Partnership, relations between Georgia and the NATO and the EU as well as Polish and Georgian bilateral cooperation in the field of security, particularly cooperation between both institutions.

Moreover, Mr. Giorgi Bokeria invited Minister Koziej to visit Tbilisi. The return visit will most probably be scheduled to autumn this year. Head of the NSB emphasized that the next meeting will be a good occasion to sign cooperation plan (the current one will remain in force until the end of 2011), which could include experiences relating to national security reviews that are currently carried out in both countries.

Minister Koziej expressed his recognition of Georgian involvement in the NATO and EU missions and approach to peaceful way of solving the conflict with Russia.

It was also noticed that the prolonged conflict with Russia prevents Georgia from integration with the NATO. Referring to this issue, Minister Bokeria pointed that lack of agreement can be deliberate action undertaken by the Russian party as they do not wish Georgia to enter the Alliance.

The discussion related also to the Polish presidency in the Council of the EU in the context of deepening the cooperation with Georgia and other Eastern European countries. By raising the non-visa regimen, Minister Bokeria mentioned that Georgia is better prepared in that regard than many other countries.

During his visit, the Secretary of the NSC of Georgia met with Minister Zbigniew Wołosowicz, Undersecretary of the State in the Ministry of National Defense, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Krzysztof Stanowski and the representatives of Polish and Georgian Parliamentary Group.
