One of the main tasks of NSB is to build, develop and promote patriotic attitudes around Polish citizens. Activities within this area result directly from the act on universal duty to defend the Republic of Poland, and indirectly from the provisions included in the National Security Strategy of the Republic of Poland.
Article 4a item 6 of the Act on universal duty to defend the Republic of Poland says “the President of the Republic of Poland initiates and provides patronage for the ventures aimed at developing patriotic and defence approach in the society”.
On the other hand, item 139 of the National Security Strategy of the Republic of Poland among the tasks that civic education of children, youngsters and adults faces, lists “developing the awareness about the citizens’ obligations concerning state’s security and defence, building patriotic approach and effective activities during peace and in states of emergency (…)”.
National Security Bureau’s activity concerning developing patriotic attitudes manifests in, among others, co-organising and co-participating in the celebrations and ceremonies commemorating historical events. Direct forms of NSB’s activity within the area of patriotism promotion include also taking activities, which develop civic attitudes, particularly around young people, as well as providing financial support for the publishing or research initiatives, which are especially valuable, under the patronage of the Head of the National Security Bureau.
The activities of the National Security Bureau include also supporting other bodies completing the tasks within the area of patriotism promotion and historical policy. Therefore, the Bureau undertakes current and long-term cooperation with the organisations and institutions engaged in developing defence and civic attitudes as well as raising the level of national education. This relates to societies of veterans and combatants, scouts and foundations engaged particularly in the activities promoting the history of Polish army. Important role belongs to cooperation with media and informal groups of fiends completing particular events of patriotic character.
National Security Bureau initiates also different type of ventures and events of educational character. Those include numerous exhibitions and historical staging as well as conferences, debates and scientific sessions among others.
In Bureau’s domain are also analytical and legislative works concerning law acts related to national heritage protection, maintaining tradition and national awareness as well proper commemoration of persons engaged in fighting for the independence of Poland. It is worth mentioning that the National Security Bureau initiated a draft of an act on the Corps of the Veterans of Struggles for Independence of the Republic of Poland, which is currently under preparation. The aim of creating such regulation is the intention to reward, honour and provide support (including financial support) those, who were fighting for the borders and independence of our country. The corps would include both, persons who participated in the struggles of WWII and Knights of the Military Cross, that is those soldiers who demonstrated their courage e.g. during their participation in foreign missions.
