Meeting with representatives of NATO „Wise Men” Group
Deputy Head of the National Security Bureau, Mr. Witold Waszczykowski and the Head of the President’s Chancellery, Mr. Wladyslaw Stasiak together with the Undersecretary of the State in the President’s Chancellery, Mr. Mariusz Handzlik met with the representatives of NATO “Wise Men” Group – Adam Rotfeld, Ambassador Hans-Friedrich von Ploetz and Bruno Racine.
Participants of the meeting discussed key issues that should be included in NATO’s New Strategic Concept. Other subjects included the future of the North Atlantic Alliance and the enlargement process. Interlocutors agreed that the key element of the New Strategic Concept should be strengthening article 5 of the NATO Treaty, both formally (NATO automatic reaction) and practically (preparing defence plans for new members of the Alliance), and emphasised that the Alliance should focus on the collective defence issue, which will influence fundamentally the reliability of the organisation in terms of its defence structure. Both parties discussed also problems relating to the allied operation in Afghanistan, NATO-Russia relations and Middle East countries.
