Head of NSB visits Ukraine

On Wednsday 18 November 2009 Head of the National Security Bureau, Mr. Aleksander Szczyglo paid an official visit to Kiev upon the invitation issued by Raisa Bohatyriowa, the Secretary of the National Security and Defence Council.

During the stay in Kiev minister Szczyglo met the President of Ukraine, Mr. Victor Yushchenko, Minister of Foreign Affairs Petro Poroshenko, Valeryi Ivashchenko acting Defence Minister and leaders of main Ukrainian political groups. President Yushchenko expressed his gratitude to the Polish party for the assistance in preventing flu epidemics.

After the meeting in the headquarters of the National Security and Defence Council the parties signed the final announcement and new, two year program of cooperation between NSB and NSDC.

Main subjects discussed related to the changes in the security situation in Europe including the EU’s reform after the Lisbon Treaty comes into effect and the works on the new NATO strategy concept. Moreover, some issues relating to completing EU’s program of Eastern Partnership, aspects of bilateral cooperation between Poland and Ukraine, including military, technical and energy cooperation and historical reconciliation were raised. The discussions concerned also situation in Ukraine before the presidential elections that are to be held in January 2010.

The parties talked through the perspectives of regional cooperation, which includes the opportunity to broaden the cooperation with Belarus. The Head of the NSB emphasized that the Polish support for the policy of European and Atlantic integration of Ukraine remains unchanged.
