President: Migration crisis should be resolved at source

The migration crisis in Europe should be resolved at its source, Polish President Andrzej Duda said in Rome on Monday after a meeting with Italian PM Matteo Renzi.

"We have agreed with the prime minister that as regards solutions to the migration crisis, it should be resolved (...) where its sources are, that is where the situation is difficult today, the wartime situation from which people are fleeing, leaving their houses and fearing for their lives, for their future and for their children, and this results in the migration pressure," President Duda said.

Andrzej Duda stressed that any initiative aimed at resolving the problem where it originated was worth considering, including the Italian proposal.

After the meeting with President Andrzej Duda, PM Matteo Renzi said that the talks had concerned July's NATO summit in Warsaw, energy, the situation in Libya and a long-term strategy for Africa as a response to the migration crisis.

Renzi admitted that there were points which lacked complete consensus, but there was a will to continue the talks and stay in touch, he said.

Referring to the NATO summit, Renzi noted that Euro-Atlantic solidarity was of key importance and added that he understood the Polish side's interest in certain "hot issues" related to the future of the alliance.

Renzi also said he had talked with Duda about the Italian government's package of proposals concerning long-term action for Africa, also in the context of the migration crisis.
