President: Poland to pursue active foreign policy

Polish foreign policy has been active and will remain as such, said Polish President Andrzej Duda referring to the policy speech delivered by Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski in the Sejm (lower house) on Friday.

Expressing approval of Minister Waszczykowski's address, the president said: "The minister set Polish foreign policy priorities, and primarily, what is very important for me, (he said) that Polish foreign policy has been and will be active, that we are working together in this respect, and that one of our top priorities is Poland's security through our membership in NATO and the 2016 NATO summit in Warsaw".

The president stressed the importance of Waszczykowski's words about reinforcing Poland's diplomacy and reopening of diplomatic missions and about Poland's commitment to help united Europe cope with its problems.

Asked about his opinion concerning the criticism levelled at the previous foreign ministers, he said that he was not surprised as the previous government closed Polish diplomatic missions in many countries and the aim of the new government was to re-establish Poland's presence there.

The president stressed that he agreed with the government's policy concerning relations with Russia. "It is our big neighbour. We should have good relations with our neighbours. But all actions should be in line with international law." Duda stressed that Poland wanted to mainain as good relations with Russia as possible. "Still, we expect that Russia will obey international law", he said.

Asked about a possible meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Duda replied: "We will see. These are future issues".
