Croatian, Polish presidents on migration, economic cooperation

The migration crisis and economic cooperation dominated Thursday's talks in Warsaw between visiting Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and Polish state head Andrzej Duda.

Duda told a press conference after the talks that he and Grabar-Kitarovic shared more or less the same views on the migration issue, notably that all efforts should be undertaken to eliminate the causes of the crisis. As examples of such steps Duda named resolving the Syrian conflict and raising support for countries hosting refugee camps.

Duda said the talks also centred on July's NATO summit in Warsaw and in this context stressed the importance of strengthening the Alliance's eastern flank.

Grabar-Kitarovic expressed hope for the implementation of joint Polish-Croatian economic projects and said further cooperation talks would be continued at an economic forum later in the day. Among future cooperation prospects she mentioned rail and road infrastructure upgrades, energy, security and R&D.

Grabar-Kitarovic said the Warsaw NATO summit will be very important and expressed hope for Montenegro's prompt accession to the Alliance. Last month NATO invited Montenegro to accession talks. If successful, the country will be the 29th NATO member.

Commenting on the migration crisis, Grabar-Kitarovic said the EU should define its admission criteria for refugees and immigrants and stressed the importance of tightening security on the Greek-Turkish border.

After the talks both presidents attended a Polish-Croatian economic forum.
