President: Warsaw NATO summit universal and forward-looking

The NATO summit in Warsaw planned for July 8-9 has to be a universal and decision-making summit that looks towards the future, Polish President Andrzej Duda said in Mons on Monday.

The NATO summit in Warsaw has to include three fundamental aspects, President Duda said after meeting with NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) General Philip Breedlove.

It has to be universal, in the sense of looking at all security issues, both in Central-Eastern Europe and on NATO's southern flank. It has to look towards the future. Thirdly, it has to involve decisions, the Polish president said.

"We absolutely agreed with General Breedlove, who also said that the summit was not just a path towards security, that the summit itself was not the goal, but that the goal was to achieve security, the kind that will guarantee us peace and calm for the future", Duda commented.

The Polish president thanked the general for supporting Poland and for plans to strengthen NATO's eastern flank. "The prospects for cooperation with NATO forces and (Poland's) greatest ally that is also the biggest military power in NATO, namely the United States, ... are looking very good", Duda said.

Poland is an example for other countries defending freedom, Breedlove said after the meeting.

He underlined that Poland was a contributor in many different fields: expanding NATO's Multinational Corps Northeast in Szczecin (west Poland), taking part in NATO support operations all over the world and this July - hosting the NATO summit.

Security is a fundamental aspect of the alliance, it is very important for our future, General Breedlove also said as he thanked Duda for the visit.

The NATO summit in Warsaw is scheduled for July 8-9 and will be held at the National Stadium. Some 2,500 delegates are expected, including heads of state and government and leaders of major international organisations.
