President: Poland extends its hand to Ukraine

Poland is extending its hand to Ukraine and doing everything to make other Western countries do the same, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said at the Supreme Council of Ukraine on Thursday.

The Polish president expressed hope that modern Polish-Ukrainian relations would not be harmed by historical experience.

On Thursday morning Bronislaw President Komorowski is addressing the Supreme Council of Ukraine as the first Polish president. Present is Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

The Polish president declared that Poland was extending its hand to Ukraine anddoing everything to make other countries and nations of the free world do the same.

"Poland's extended hand is not a sign of political sentiment but of our understanding of historical processes that should make one see Ukraine as an equal-righted and extremely important partner and neighbour," the Polish president said.

President Komorowski stressed that it was not the past but the future of Polish-Ukrainian relations that mattered.

On Thursday afternoon the Polish and Ukrainian presidents will visit Bykivnia to attend observances marking the 75th anniversary of the 1940 Katyn Forest Massacre of around 22 thousand Polish officers by Soviet security.

Later in the day the Polish head of state will meet with PM Arseny Yatseniuk and Poles living in Ukraine.
