President: Cooperation for security

There will be close cooperation in security matters, President Bronislaw Komorowski said Friday signing a law regulating wartime national defence command issues.

The new law among others strengthens the president's and defence minister's role in the supervision of wartime defence operations. Under the new regulations the armed forces supreme commander will take over command of all military units directly involved in defence, the remaining military tasks to be overseen by the Defence Ministry.

The supreme commander will be appointed by the president in peacetime on a motion by the government.

Signing the act, Komorowski said it equipped the Polish state with adequate means for effective and rapid response to threats.

"This act gives the Polish state the realistic ability to react to various potential threats effectively and quickly. Time and fast response are always of primary importance in such situations", the president said.

He added that the new regulations also gave Poland greater deterrent potential to help avert possible threats to the country.

"We have no war now, but in order for there to be no war we must be well and strongly organised, we must have force at our disposal. This discourages potential aggressors in the highest degree", Komorowski opined.
