President Komorowski on Ukraine

Poland is and will continue to be in the forefront of actions designed to end the conflict in Ukraine and maintain its integrity, President Bronisław Komorowski said Tuesday, adding that Poland should also help seek ways to rebuild trust between the EU and Russia.

President Bronislaw Komorowski stressed that Poland should support sanctions imposed on Russia but should not be in the forefront of actions initiated by the West towards that country.

"Poland must be in the forefront of actions designed to support Ukraine in its efforts to maintain territorial integrity and independence, and should also be in the forefront of moves aimed at restoring confidence between the EU and its powerful Russian neighbour," the president said.

President Komorowski stressed that the point now was to seek ways to end the Ukraine crisis "not through a military triumph of the stronger one over the weaker, namely of Russia over Ukraine. (...) That is why we are doing our best to help Ukraine maintain its integrity and discourage Russia from conducting such policy towards other countries," he stressed.

The president expressed hope that it would be possible to use economic cooperation to build security in Europe when the conflict ended.
