President decorates NATO Europe commander

President Bronislaw Komorowski Tuesday received on Tuesday NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) General Philip Breedlove. The talks were preceded by Breedlove's decoration with a Commander's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.

The talks focused on the implementation of decisions of the recent NATO summit in Wales, including plans to strengthen NATO's eastern flank. Komorowski and Breedlove also discussed the Ukraine crisis and resulting need to deepen cooperation between the NATO states.

During Breedlove's decoration in the Belvedere Palace in Warsaw, Bronislaw Komorowski said he was convinced Polish-US relations could be further strengthened. Commenting the distinction, Komorowski noted that "it was important to notice persons merited in building special relations (...) between Poles and Americans".

Breedlove recalled his recent meeting with Polish soldiers in Afghanistan and said they "symbolised everything we have done until now, both regarding Polish-American relations and within the North Atlantic Alliance".

"You are a great people and a magnificent country. Your brave soldiers, whom we greatly appreciate, have been our partners for years", Breedlove said.

Present at the meeting were National Security Bureau (BBN) head Stanislaw Koziej, deputy Defence Minister Maciej Jankowski, presidential aide Jaromir Sokolowski, chief of the general staff of the Polish Army general Mieczyslaw Gocul and armed forces commanders Lech Majewski and Marek Tomaszycki.
