Head of the NSB visits Lithuania

Wednesday, 11 July 2012. Head of the National Security Bureau, Stanisław Koziej, on behalf of the President of Poland visited air base near Szawle, where the Polish Military Contingent “Orlik 4” has been executing NATO’s Air Policing mission over the territory of the Baltic States.

Upon coming to the base, the commander of PMC “Orlik”, Lt Col Leszek Błach, brought a dispatch on the tasks and conditions of the mission. The Head of the NSB was then familiarized with the conditions and infrastructure in the base. He also observed the take-off of two Mig-29 aircrafts.

Minister Koziej met next with the soldiers sharing the words written by President Bronisław Komorowski and handed in state decorations and distinctions on behalf of the president. Cpt. Piotr Kuczyński and warrant officer first class, Bogusław Różycki, were awarded the Flying Cross of Merit and the commander of PMC “Orlik 4”, along with 8 pilots, was awarded distinctions.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of National Defence of Lithuania, Mykolas Juozoapavičius, Major General Edvardas Mažeikis and the commander of the Air Force Base in Szawle, Virginjus Steponavičius.

After the meeting in PMC “Orlik 4” base, the Head of the NSB went to Vilnius, where he met in the Polish Embassy with the Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė and other representatives of the Lithuanian authorities responsible for state security. Minister S. Koziej emphasized good cooperation between Poland and Lithuania in the field of defense and security. He also said that there is a need to continue and strengthen regional projects, such as creation of international brigade LITPOLURKBRIZ. Lithuanian Minister of Defence urged Poland to join the Energy Security Center, operating in Lithuania and included in the NATO structures.

Afterwards, in St. Raphael Church, minister S. Koziej participated with veterans in votive mass for the soldiers serving in PCM “Orlik 4” and paid tribute to the victims of the Katyń massacre.

Polish delegation, along with the Lithuanian Commander of the Army, assisted by the Representative Company of the Polish Army, laid a wreath on the grave, where Marshal Józef Piłsudski’s heart is buried and on the grave of Jonas Basanavičius.
