The Weimar Triangle summit

Monday morning in Warsaw saw the beginning of the Weimar Triangle summit. The official welcoming ceremony took place at the courtyard of the Wilanów Palace. The presidents of France and Poland, Nicolas Sarkozy and Bronisław Komorowski, and the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel, took part in the ceremony. National anthems of France, Germany, and Poland were played.

"I would like to say that I am very pleased with the fact that our joint efforts enhanced Polish-German-French cooperation within the Weimar Triangle. Now is the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Weimar Triangle and the grouping has been operating well at many levels," the Polish President said at the press conference organised for him and the visiting political leaders from Germany and France.

Bronisław Komorowski said that, during his meeting with Sarkozy and Merkel, issues connected with countering the economic crisis in the EU were discussed, as well as matters pertaining to the Polish presidency in the EU, with particular attention being paid to the policy of safety and defence. "Poland continues to hold to its claim that this policy should be developed," Bronisław Komorowski added.
The Polish President said that he also discussed other matters with Sarkozy and Merkel, including the training of diplomats and the cooperation among scientific institutions and television.

When asked if during the Polish presidency over the European Union there will be a meeting of the presidents of the Weimar Triangle with the President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, Bronisław Komorowski said that "this would be by all means advisable." "This question pertains to the progress of the cooperation between Russia and the EU at large and – to some extent – also to the development of the Russian-Polish relations," the Polish President said.

Nicolas Sarkozy spoke after Komorowski and said that, in his opinion, "Komorowski's approach to relations with Russia is both very intelligent and bold." "Such activity will make a good impression and will facilitate the awareness of the fact that the Cold War is no more. If such a meeting is to be held in the future, France will take part in it with pleasure," the French President added.

Angela Merkel said that she will be happy if Poland joins the competitiveness pact. The presidents of Germany and France made their intention to cooperate within the Euro Zone closer known on the last Friday – this is the "pact for competitiveness." "The pact for competitiveness is open to other countries and we will be glad if Poland becomes a part of it," Merkel said.
